JavaScript Performance Interview Questions

Performance questions test real-world engineering judgment. Learn debounce, throttle, memory leaks, and browser rendering.

The Mental Model

Picture a restaurant kitchen during a dinner rush. There's one head chef (the JavaScript thread). They can only work on one dish at a time. If a dish requires 30 minutes in the oven, the chef doesn't stand there watching it — they use a timer, move on to other dishes, and come back when the oven beeps. But if a prep task requires 10 solid minutes of knife work with no breaks, no other dish gets attention for those 10 minutes. The kitchen grinds to a halt. JavaScript performance is about keeping that head chef from being blocked. Every millisecond the thread spends on synchronous work is a millisecond the browser can't respond to user input, can't animate, can't paint. A 50ms task is invisible. A 300ms task is perceptible. A 1000ms task makes the page feel broken. The key insight: performance is not about writing clever micro-optimised code. It's about understanding where time actually goes — network, parsing, layout, JavaScript execution — and systematically eliminating the biggest bottlenecks. Measure first, optimise second. Every premature optimisation that sacrifices readability for performance is a bet you haven't measured the table odds for.

The rendering pipeline — what JavaScript blocks

The browser renders frames. Each frame has a budget (16.7ms at 60fps). JavaScript runs on the same thread as rendering. Long tasks block the rendering pipeline.

Common Misconceptions

Many devs think JavaScript is slow because it's interpreted — but actually modern JavaScript engines (V8, SpiderMonkey, JavaScriptCore) use JIT compilation. Frequently executed code is compiled to highly optimised machine code at runtime, approaching native performance for hot paths. JavaScript's performance characteristics are mostly about how you use it — algorithmic complexity, DOM interaction, and memory patterns — not interpreter overhead.

Many devs think more variables means more memory and slower code — but actually the biggest memory and performance problems are almost always algorithmic: O(n²) loops over large arrays, retaining large datasets in closures unnecessarily, or processing data that could be streamed in chunks. Adding a few local variables for readability has immeasurable performance impact compared to fixing a quadratic algorithm.

Many devs think CSS transforms and opacity changes go through the same pipeline as other CSS properties — but actually transform and opacity are composited on the GPU compositor thread, completely bypassing the main JavaScript/layout thread. Animating transform or opacity is the only truly "free" animation from a JavaScript performance perspective. Animating width, height, top, left, or color triggers layout or paint and competes with JavaScript for main thread time.

Many devs think the garbage collector pauses are unavoidable and uncontrollable — but actually allocation rate is the primary driver of GC pressure. The more objects you create, the more frequently GC runs, and the longer its pauses. Object pooling, reusing arrays by clearing and refilling rather than creating new ones, and avoiding creating thousands of small short-lived objects in hot paths all directly reduce GC pause frequency and duration.

Many devs think async code is faster than synchronous code — but actually async code is not faster by itself. An async function that awaits one operation takes the same amount of CPU time as the synchronous equivalent — it just doesn't block the thread while waiting for I/O. The performance benefit is concurrency (doing multiple I/O operations in parallel with Promise.all), not raw speed. Async code for pure computation (no I/O) is slightly slower than synchronous due to Promise overhead.

Many devs think virtual DOM (React, Vue 2) is the fastest way to update the DOM — but actually virtual DOM diffing is an overhead that's justified by developer ergonomics, not raw performance. Svelte compiles to direct DOM updates with no virtual DOM. Solid.js uses fine-grained reactivity with no diffing. For highly performance-sensitive applications, direct DOM manipulation with careful batching is faster. React's value is predictability and ecosystem, not being the fastest DOM updater.

Where You'll See This in Real Code

Google's Core Web Vitals — LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), INP (Interaction to Next Paint), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — are JavaScript performance metrics that directly affect SEO rankings. INP measures the latency of every interaction on the page; tasks longer than 200ms cause poor INP scores. Every long JavaScript task is a direct SEO risk, which is why performance monitoring tools like Lighthouse and Chrome UX Report are standard in production frontend teams.

React 18's concurrent rendering is a direct response to the long-task blocking problem — React can now pause rendering work in the middle of a component tree, let the browser handle user input, and resume. This is done by slicing render work into small units and checking after each unit if higher-priority work (like an input keystroke) is pending. startTransition() marks state updates as non-urgent, letting React deprioritise them in favor of urgent updates like text input.

Webpack's code splitting and lazy loading solve the initial JavaScript parse-and-execute cost — the browser must parse and compile every byte of JavaScript before it can execute. A 500kb bundle takes significantly more time to parse on low-end mobile devices than on a developer's MacBook. Dynamic import() splits the bundle so only the code for the current route is parsed on load, reducing time-to-interactive by seconds on mobile.

V8's TurboFan optimising compiler relies on type feedback — it watches which types are passed to functions and compiles optimised code for those types. If you call processUser(user) thousands of times with objects of the same shape, TurboFan generates a fast path for that shape. If you then call it once with a different shape, TurboFan deoptimises and falls back to the general path. This is why type-consistency in hot code paths (the kind TypeScript encourages) has measurable performance benefits beyond compile-time safety.

The requestIdleCallback API lets you schedule non-critical work during browser idle periods — analytics, cache warming, prefetching — without competing with user interactions. React's original Fiber architecture concept was to use requestIdleCallback to break rendering work into frames. While React 18's scheduler is more sophisticated, requestIdleCallback remains the correct tool for truly background work that should never compete with rendering.

Node.js's cluster module and worker_threads solve the single-threaded limitation for CPU-intensive work — if you're running image processing, cryptography, or data transformation in Node, it blocks the event loop. worker_threads let you run CPU-heavy work on separate threads with SharedArrayBuffer for zero-copy data sharing. The main thread stays free to handle incoming requests. This is the Node.js equivalent of Web Workers in the browser.
